Noam Chomsky: Venezuela is a Model for Latin America and the World

During a forum held in the Massachussets Institute of Technology, Writer Noam Chomsky pointed out that Venezuela is setting an example regarding cooperation and solidarity. Most of American people get little or no information about the great achievements of the Bolivarian Revolution because the media hide the positive things

Venezuela is setting an example regarding cooperation and solidarity for Latin America and the world by sending oil and fuel to low-income people in the United States, thinks the outstanding American writer and intellectual Noam Chomsky.

During a forum held in the Massachussets Institute of Technology, in Boston, United States, Chomsky pointed out several times that the Venezuelan process is a model for the region and for the planet, specially because of the social policy that has achieved huge successes in the fields of education, medical aid and in recovering the Venezuelans’ dignity. “Venezuela successfully defied the United States and this country does not accept any defiance, and less if they do it successfully, that’s the crux of the matter,” the writer said.

The university historian and professor was part of the panel “Terrorism: Its Origins and Consequences,” which gathered teachers, students, researchers, politicians, intellectuals, journalists and social leaders, according to the Venezuelan council in Boston.

Chomsky stressed that when Venezuela sends discounted heating oil to poor and homeless American people, “it sets an example of cooperation and solidarity with the American people and the entire world is witnessing that.”

The American writer has faced the foreign policy of President George W. Bush’s government through his books and in the international field. He spent most of his time in lecturing in universities, unions and social organizations.

He stated that most of the American people get little or no information about the great achievements of the Bolivarian Revolution led by President of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez Frías, “because the media just highlight the bad things and hide the positive things.”

He announced that he will visit Caracas at the end of October in order to participate in some conferences and forums on how Americans see the Latin American situation.

U.S. Shelters Terrorists

Noam Chomsky pointed out that the United States – according to the foreign policy of President George W. Bush – “thinks it has the privilege of finding any people or country terrorist.”

He stated that according to this rule, the U.S. Air Force “should drop a bomb on Washington, since the American government shelters Luis Posada Carriles and has ignored the Venezuelan request for extraditing one of the most known terrorists in the continent and who is about to get out of jail.”

Before the discussion, they play the documentary “Mission against Terror”, which gathers testimonies, documents and reports the illegal arrest of five Cuban citizens in the United States. These Caribbeans were doing a research against the terrorist activities of Orlando Bosch and Luis Posada Carriles, responsible for bombing a DC-8 airplane of Cubana de Aviación on October 6, 1976, in Barbados where all 73 passengers died.

Chomsky reminded that Posada Carriles, former CIA agent, was a fugitive in Venezuela, where legal actions against him were being taken due to the Cuban airplane attack. In spite of this, he was received in American soil and sent to El Salvador, where he organized the Nicaraguan Contras –along with Captain Olivier North.

“Now the Cuban terrorist is in a prison in El Paso (Texas) and the Venezuelan request for extraditing him has not been answered, it seems it is miles away,” he complained. “Tomorrow he will be walking free in Miami, Florida, so there is a contradiction between what they say and what they do in the United States regarding terrorism,” pointed out Chomsky.
